Interviews with Locals: Janine Duffy

Lewis Nicolson's latest chat is with Janine Duffy on her property overlooking Staughton Vale Road.

Janine is President of the Koala Clancy Foundation that is planting koala forests on private land throughout our region.

"I am utterly devastated about this and I can't believe that a good school like Bacchus Marsh Grammar would even consider a project like this. All I can think is they don't realise," she Janine.

As a respected koala researcher - with a number of scientific papers about koalas under her belt - Janine knows a lot about the impact of large scale developments on wildlife.

"The risk of losing these koalas is particularly close to my heart because we have a named koala who's part of our research project right there in front of this development who regularly crosses that road. His name is Pete," Janine says. 

Many locals know Koala Pete, Janine says, emphasising that, "the thing for koalas is not whether there's a road or not. It's how much traffic is on the road. That is really the big deciding factor as to whether a road destroys a koala population."

"No one here has anything against schools or children but massive schools that are meant to be in urban areas [should no be] plonked out here."
